Yellowstone Draba is a small, hardy perennial with bright yellow, four-petaled flowers that are among the first to bloom in early spring, often emerging just after the snow melts. These early blossoms provide vital nectar and pollen for bees, hoverflies, and other early-season pollinators. Its compact, tufted form and tiny, hairy green leaves help it conserve moisture and tolerate intense sun and wind.
Well adapted to well-drained rocky or sandy soils, Yellowstone Draba is ideal for alpine gardens, rock crevices, and dry prairie plantings. Despite its delicate appearance, it is remarkably resilient, tolerating cold, drought, and nutrient-poor conditions with ease. Found in alpine meadows, high-elevation grasslands, and rocky slopes from the montane to the alpine, it also helps stabilize fragile soils in exposed habitats. Its small size, hairy foliage, and low nutrient content make it an unlikely target for deer and other herbivores.
