Crowfoot Violet is a low-growing prairie perennial known for its finely divided, deeply lobed leaves that resemble tiny crow's feet. In spring to early summer, it produces vibrant violet-purple flowers with a darker purple center, creating a striking contrast against the delicate foliage. An important early-season nectar source for native bees, small butterflies, and other pollinators, it also serves as a larval host plant for fritillary butterfly species.
Well-adapted to dry, open grasslands and sunny prairie sites, Crowfoot Violet thrives in well-drained soils and is highly tolerant of drought and heat. Its tidy clumps make it a beautiful addition to rock gardens, prairie plantings, native wildflower gardens, and naturalized landscapes. Moderately deer resistant, while young growth may be lightly browsed, established plants persist and spread gently over time.
