Annual Wild Sunflower is a fast-growing, sun-loving annual with large, golden-yellow blooms surrounding dark central disks. With sturdy, branching stems and broad, rough-textured leaves, this iconic prairie plant adds height and vibrant color to wildflower meadows, gardens, and roadside plantings. Blooming from mid-summer to fall, it serves as a valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while its nutrient-rich seeds are a favorite food for birds and wildlife.
Annual Sunflower self-seeds readily, making it a reliable choice for rural gardens and naturalized spaces. It can also be managed in urban gardens by removing spent flower heads, and unwanted seedlings are easy to weed out. Its deep roots help stabilize soil, making it useful for restoration plantings, while its ability to draw up nutrients and add organic matter makes it beneficial for soil improvement. While not a preferred food source, deer may occasionally browse young or tender growth, especially in spring.

Traditional Edible & Medicinal Info
Helianthus annuus seeds are highly nutritious, eaten raw, roasted, or pressed for sunflower oil, while young sprouts and petals can be added to salads. Medicinally, leaf and flower infusions were used to reduce fevers and treat respiratory ailments, while crushed leaves were applied as a poultice for cuts and sores. Some preparations were taken to ease stomach discomfort, and though not toxic, excessive consumption of raw seeds may cause digestive issues due to their high fat content.
