Sitka Valerian is a tall, elegant perennial with clusters of fragrant, pale pink to white flowers that bloom from late spring into summer. A valuable nectar source for a wide range of pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and moths, its broad, clustered blooms serve as perfect landing pads for larger insects, while seeds are occasionally eaten by small birds. Deeply lobed green leaves form a lush base, while sturdy stems rise above, adding height and bringing a wild, graceful charm to naturalized gardens and restoration plantings.
Thriving in cool, damp environments, Sitka Valerian spreads by rhizomes to create dense stands. It is common along streambanks, forest edges, moist meadows, and in rich soils at mid to high elevations. Moderately deer resistant, the coarse leaves and strong-smelling roots reduce palatability, though young shoots may be browsed in early spring.
