Golden Sedge is a small, clump-forming perennial sedge that brings subtle beauty to moist habitats with its fine-textured green foliage and delicate, golden seed heads. Blooming in late spring to early summer, its seed heads add seasonal interest and attract seed-eating birds such as sparrows and sandpipers. Unlike more aggressive sedges, Golden Sedge forms scattered clumps rather than dense mats, allowing for more open, naturalistic growth.
Thriving in damp, well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade, it spreads slowly by rhizomes—making it ideal for stabilizing soil in wet areas without becoming invasive. It is well-suited for rain gardens, pond edges, drainage swales, and naturalized wetland restorations. Found in the prairies and foothills, it often grows in seasonally wet soils along streams and in open, disturbed wetlands. While sedges are not highly palatable, occasional browsing may occur in heavily grazed areas; however, its clumping habit allows it to recover easily.
