Prairie Sagewort is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial known for its finely cut, silvery-green foliage and distinctive aromatic scent. Growing in dense, low mounds, it adds soft texture and year-round interest to dry grasslands, foothills, and rocky slopes. While its small yellowish flowers are inconspicuous, the foliage is prized for its resilience, visual appeal, and cultural importance. Some moth and butterfly larvae use it as a host plant, and its seeds may offer a minor food source for small birds in late fall and winter.
Thriving in well-drained soils, Prairie Sagewort spreads gradually by rhizomes and excels in erosion control, xeriscaping, and naturalized plantings. It tolerates poor, dry soils and readily colonizes disturbed areas, overgrazed rangelands, and exposed slopes where few other species persist. This plant is also allelopathic, releasing chemicals that inhibit the germination of nearby competing plants. Its aromatic, bitter foliage contains compounds that deter browsing, making it rarely eaten by deer even in high-pressure environments.
