Prairie Sage is a hardy, aromatic perennial known for its silvery-green foliage, cultural significance, and role as a host plant for certain moth and butterfly larvae. Growing in clumps with tall, upright stems, it adds striking texture and movement to dry grasslands, open woodlands, and prairie ecosystems. Though its small, pale yellow flowers appear in late summer, the plant is primarily valued for its fragrant, sacred leaves and its ecological importance.
Thriving in well-drained sandy or gravelly soils, Prairie Sage is highly drought-tolerant and spreads aggressively through rhizomes, making it ideal for erosion control, rural landscapes, and naturalized plantings. It flourishes in dry prairies, foothills, and disturbed sites, often outcompeting other species due to its allelopathic properties, which release chemicals that inhibit the growth of nearby plants. The strong scent and bitter compounds in the foliage deter browsing, making it a dependable choice in deer-prone areas.
