Purple Prairie Clover is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial with vibrant purple, cylindrical flower spikes that bloom from mid-summer into fall. Its fine, fern-like green leaves and upright habit add texture and structure to prairie plantings and pollinator gardens. As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it improves soil health while offering rich nectar for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Thriving in well-drained sandy or rocky soils, Purple Prairie Clover is ideal for xeriscapes, sunny gardens, wildflower meadows, and erosion control plantings. It pairs beautifully with native grasses and wildflowers and is commonly found in dry grasslands, foothills, and open meadows where it thrives in nutrient-poor, exposed conditions. While not a preferred food source, young plants may be lightly browsed in areas with high deer populations, though established plants typically recover well.
