Shrubby Beardtongue is a low-growing, woody perennial classified as a subshrub, bursting into bloom with clusters of large, vibrant lavender-pink to purple, tubular flowers from late spring to early summer, attracting native solitary bees and other pollinators. Hummingbirds seek out its nectar, and it is occasionally visited by butterflies. Its thick, leathery evergreen leaves make it highly drought-tolerant, allowing it to thrive in rocky, well-drained soils. While it generally remains evergreen through winter, it may occasionally die back, especially in Chinook country, and lose its foliage, but it recovers quickly in spring.
Well-suited for alpine gardens, xeriscapes, and self-sustaining landscapes, Shrubby Beardtongue is a cold-hardy, resilient native that adds color and texture to both urban and rural plantings. With its showy flowers and rugged adaptability, it is an excellent choice for naturalized spaces and dryland gardens. Highly resistant to grazing, its tough, woody stems and bitter foliage deter most herbivores, including deer.
