Lyalls Penstemon is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial that adds vivid purple to lavender-blue tubular flowers to dry, rocky landscapes. It has upright stems with lance-shaped green leaves and forms tidy clumps. Blooming from early to mid-summer, its nectar-rich flowers provide an important food source for native solitary bees and other pollinators. Hummingbirds feed on its nectar, drawn to the tubular blooms, and butterflies may visit occasionally. With its striking flowers and ability to thrive in tough environments, Lyalls Penstemon is a standout choice for both urban and rural naturalized plantings.
Cold-hardy and long-lived, Lyalls Penstemon thrives in high-elevation and cooler-climate gardens. This resilient native is ideal for xeriscapes, alpine plantings, and self-sustaining prairie or meadow landscapes. Its thick, leathery green leaves help it withstand harsh conditions while also making it moderately deer-resistant.
