Alberta Penstemon produces clusters of tubular, sky-blue to lavender flowers in late spring to early summer, that attract hummingbirds, which seek out its blooms for nectar, with butterflies visiting occasionally, as well as native solitary bees and bumblebees, which pollinate its flowers. Its compact, clump-forming habit and narrow, shiny green foliage add structure and texture to hot, sunny spaces, native pollinator plantings, and rock gardens in both urban and rural landscapes.
Alberta Penstemon is a cold-hardy, drought-tolerant, short-lived perennial that reseeds itself and thrives in dry, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes and self-sustaining landscapes. Adapted to arid conditions, it plays a valuable role in supporting pollinators in harsh environments. Moderately resistant to deer, it is typically avoided due to its bitter foliage.
