Nodding Onion is a hardy, clump-forming perennial known for its elegant, drooping clusters of pink to pale white flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. The slender, arching stems give the blooms their signature nodding appearance, adding movement and charm to garden spaces. Its nectar-rich flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, including native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The narrow, grass-like leaves carry a mild onion flavor and can be harvested and used as an edible herb.
Naturally found in dry meadows, rocky slopes, and open woods, Nodding Onion prefers well-drained, sandy, or gravelly soils. Drought-tolerant once established, it’s a perfect fit for rock gardens, xeriscapes, and pollinator-friendly landscapes. Its strong onion scent and taste make it unappealing to deer and other herbivores.
