Mountain Sweet Cicely is a delicate woodland perennial that thrives in moist, shaded forests and riparian areas. Its finely divided, fern-like foliage adds soft texture, while clusters of small, white flowers bloom from late spring to early summer, attracting native bees. Birds may also feed on its seeds. This native plant is valued for its aromatic, edible parts, the roots and seeds have a sweet, anise-like flavor and can be used as seasoning, while the young leaves are occasionally foraged for their mild, licorice-like taste.
Thriving in rich, well-drained soils, Mountain Sweet Cicely is a beautiful and functional addition to self-sustaining gardens, woodland plantings, and food forests, offering both ecological benefits and a connection to traditional foraging practices. Deer and other herbivores may browse the leaves, but it is not a preferred forage species.
