Mountain Hollyhock is a tall, striking perennial with soft, maple-like leaves and spikes of pale pink to white, hollyhock-like flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Its delicate yet sturdy blossoms attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly landscapes. While deer may browse young shoots, mature plants are less palatable due to their rough-textured leaves. It spreads through both seeds and short rhizomes, forming dense colonies, and though it remains well-mannered, its large size may require root pruning in urban spaces.
Mountain Hollyhock is well suited for gardens, wildflower meadows, open woodlands, and naturalized plantings. As a pioneer species, it helps restore disturbed habitats by stabilizing soil and enriching nutrient content. Well adapted to cooler climates and higher elevations, this hardy, low-maintenance perennial adds height, texture, and late-season color to both rural and urban landscapes. While not deer-proof, its coarse foliage and mature size reduce browsing pressure, especially once established.

Traditional Edible & Medicinal Info
Traditionally, Indigenous peoples use Iliamna rivularis as a soothing infusion to ease sore throats, coughs, and lung irritation, while crushed leaves were applied as poultices for burns, rashes, and insect bites to reduce inflammation. Some preparations were taken to relieve stomach discomfort, and though not toxic, excessive consumption may cause digestive upset.
