Showy Locoweed features silvery-green, fern-like foliage that provides soft texture, while its vibrant purple to pink, pea-like flowers bloom from early to mid-summer, attracting butterflies and native bees, including bumblebees, which pollinate its flowers. Like all locoweeds, it is toxic to livestock, and while its heavy seeds do not travel far, it should be planted with care in grazing areas. This eye-catching wildflower is well suited for hot, sunny locations, pollinator gardens, and rock gardens in both urban and rural spaces. Pair it with other Oxytropis species for an even more colorful display.
A striking, drought-tolerant perennial, Showy Locoweed thrives in dry prairies, grasslands, and rocky slopes. Deep-rooted and highly resilient, this hardy native excels in xeriscapes and self-sustaining landscapes, offering bold color, ecological benefits, and the ability to withstand tough conditions. Its toxicity and bitter taste deter most herbivores, including deer.
