Rough Fescue is a tall, cool-season bunchgrass with fine-textured, deep green to blue-green leaves that turn brilliant shades of orange, pink, and yellow in the cool autumn months. Forming dense, upright clumps, it is a long-lived, drought-tolerant species that plays a vital role in native prairie and foothill ecosystems. It provides excellent forage for wildlife and important shelter for native bumblebees and ground-nesting birds like sharp-tailed grouse.
Much larger than other Fescue species, Rough Fescue thrives in well-drained soils but is best suited for rural spaces due to its mature height and tendency to spread. Rough Fescue is highly allelopathic, releasing natural compounds that suppress the growth of surrounding plants and allow it to maintain dominance in undisturbed native grasslands. It is ideal for prairie restoration, erosion control, and naturalized meadows where it can establish freely and thrive over time. Although it offers excellent forage for large grazers, it is not a preferred food source for deer and may be browsed lightly when other forage is limited.

Distribution Info
Rough Fescue is a keystone species of the Fescue grasslands, found primarily in AB, BC, and SK, with some occurrences in MB, and its range extends down into the northern Rocky Mountains in the US. Thriving primarily in foothills, open meadows, grasslands, and montane regions, its extensive, deep root system enables it to endure drought, extreme cold, and grazing pressure.
