Rocky Mountain Fescue is a hardy, cool-season bunchgrass with fine, blue-green leaves that form dense, tufted clumps used by ground-nesting birds for both cover and food. Deeply rooted and highly drought-tolerant, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, requiring little to no mowing or supplemental watering to remain green and resilient. When seeded densely, it forms a soft, lumpy lawn ideal as a low-maintenance alternative to traditional sod, while individual plants can reach up to 14 inches in diameter when spaced apart.
Its upright, airy seed heads bring gentle movement and texture to the landscape, pairing beautifully with wildflowers in low meadow plantings. Known for its allelopathic properties, it helps suppress competing vegetation and maintain open space. This adaptable species is well suited for erosion control, prairie restoration, xeriscaping, and as a sustainable lawn replacement in water-conscious landscapes. Although not deer-proof, its fine texture and tough leaves make it a less desirable food source.
Rocky Mountain Fescue is also available in larger quantities and is used in some of our grass mixes. These products can be found in our "Native Grass Seed and Mixes" section.

Distribution Info
In Canada, Rocky Mountain Fescue is widely distributed from BC, to ON, and YT and in the US, it's mostly found in Rocky Mountain states. It is particularly well adapted to rocky, high-elevation sites where few other grasses can establish. It typically thrives in dry grasslands, foothills, open forests, and rocky slopes, where it adapts well to sandy, rocky, and nutrient-poor soils.
