Wild Blue Clematis is a delicate, twining perennial vine growing to 12' with nodding, bell-shaped blue flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Its slender, vining stems weave naturally through shrubs, small trees, and trellises, adding a soft, woodland charm to naturalized plantings. The feathery seed heads that follow the blooms provide additional ornamental interest and persist well into fall. Their seeds provide food for small birds like goldfinches and serve as nesting material for some species.
It is well suited for woodland edges, riparian plantings, garden trellises, and even up spruce trees where it climbs gracefully without being overly aggressive. Typically found in moist woodlands, rocky slopes, and along streambanks and forest edges where it tolerates seasonal drought once established, but prefers consistent moisture in shaded habitats. It is moderately deer-resistant, due to its bitter taste, however, young shoots may still be nibbled, especially in areas with high deer populations.
