Umbrella Buckwheat is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial with dense clusters of creamy white flowers that gradually fade to soft pink as they age. Blooming for an extended period from late spring through summer, it provides a long-lasting nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its low, ground-hugging growth habit and leathery, deep green leaves ”flashing brilliant red in the fall” make it a striking addition to rock gardens, xeriscapes, and dry prairie plantings.
Thriving in nutrient-poor soils, Umbrella Buckwheat is highly resilient and excels at erosion control on slopes and disturbed sites. With its long bloom period and low-maintenance nature, it performs beautifully in both rural and urban landscapes. Naturally found in dry grasslands, alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and open woodlands at mid to high elevations, it is well adapted to drought and harsh environmental conditions. Its tough, leathery foliage and compact form reduce its appeal to browsing animals.
