Paper Birch is a striking, fast-growing tree growing to 33' tall and 23' wide and known for its iconic white, peeling bark and brilliant yellow fall foliage. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, it naturally occurs in mixed woodlands, along riverbanks, and in open meadows, where it provides shade, habitat, and seasonal beauty. A crucial tree for wildlife, it provides food and shelter for birds, mammals, and pollinators.
While it prefers moist soils, it is relatively adaptable, and its graceful, upright form and shimmering leaves make it a standout in the landscapes. It's common in the boreal forest, it's often found in mixed wood stands alongside aspen, spruce, and fir along river valleys, lake-shores, and moist uplands. Tender young shoots and saplings are highly palatable to deer.

Traditional Edible & Medicinal Info
Paper Birch has long been valued for both its ecological and medicinal properties. The inner bark is rich in salicylates, compounds with pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects similar to aspirin, and has been traditionally used in teas and poultices for fevers, colds, and joint pain. The sap, which can be tapped in spring, is mildly sweet and has been used as a tonic.
