Baneberry is a hardy, shade-loving perennial known for its finely divided, dark green foliage and striking clusters of bright red (or occasionally white) berries that ripen in late summer. In spring to early summer, delicate, fluffy white flowers bloom above the deeply lobed leaves, offering an early-season resource for native bees and other pollinators. The dramatic contrast between the airy blooms and later glossy berries adds texture and visual intrigue to shaded gardens.
Naturally found in moist woodlands, forest edges, and shaded slopes, Baneberry thrives in rich, well-drained soils. It's an excellent addition to woodland or shady gardens, shaded borders, or naturalized plantings where it contributes both structure and seasonal interest. Due to the toxic nature of its berries and foliage, Baneberry is rarely browsed by deer, offering strong natural resistance to grazing.
