Smooth Aster is a large, resilient, late-season perennial that produces a profusion of lavender to violet-blue, daisy-like flowers accented by bright yellow centers. Its smooth, bluish-green foliage and sturdy, upright stems set it apart from other asters, adding refined texture to prairies, meadows, and open woodlands. Blooming from late summer into fall, this hardy native is often one of the last nectar sources for bees, butterflies, and migrating Monarchs. Its seeds are eaten by finches and other small birds, and it also serves as a larval host for several moth species and some butterflies. Like many asters, it offers striking fall foliage in shades of purple and red.
A large plant capable of producing hundreds of wind-borne seeds, Smooth Aster is best suited for larger naturalized plantings, reclamation projects, and rural gardens. It thrives in challenging, dry sites where other plants struggle and is moderately deer-resistant due to its tough, smooth foliage and wiry stems.
