Hairy Arnica is a hardy, clump-forming perennial with bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. Its soft, hairy leaves help retain moisture, allowing it to thrive in dry, well-drained soils. The nectar-rich blooms support bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while its seeds offer food for small birds and mammals.
Unlike some Arnica species that spread aggressively by rhizomes, Hairy Arnica forms tidy, non-invasive clumps, making it an excellent choice for urban gardens, naturalized borders, and pollinator-friendly plantings. The hairy, bitter-tasting foliage is generally avoided by deer, though occasional browsing may still occur in high-pressure areas.
