Long-Headed Anemone is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial known for its delicate, pale greenish-white flowers that bloom in early to mid-summer. Its finely divided, feathery foliage adds soft texture to meadows, prairie plantings, and dry, well-drained gardens. As the season progresses, the flowers give way to elongated, cylindrical seed heads covered in fine hairs, which create a unique, fluffy appearance and persist into fall. The blooms attract a variety of native pollinators, particularly small bees and flies, while the showy seed heads add long-lasting seasonal interest.
Thriving in sandy, gravelly, or loamy soils, this adaptable wildflower blends beautifully with grasses and other prairie perennials. Additionally, the plant produces protoanemonin, an allelopathic substance that inhibits seed germination and seedling growth of many species. Due to the presence of this compound and its bitter taste, Long-Headed Anemone is typically avoided by deer and other herbivores.
