Product Options

Round-Leaved Alumroot is a compact, drought-tolerant perennial with scalloped, round green leaves that form dense clumps, turning rich red and bronze in the fall. In late spring to early summer, tall, slender stems rise above the foliage, topped with clusters of small, creamy white flowers that add a delicate, airy texture to the landscape. Its nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, while small birds may feed on its seeds, and its dense foliage provides shelter for insects and ground-dwelling wildlife. The name "alumroot" comes from its historical use as an astringent to stop bleeding and treat wounds.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this resilient plant is well suited for rock gardens, dry slopes, and naturalized plantings. Its tough, slightly hairy leaves make it unpalatable to most herbivores, offering strong deer resistance even in exposed locations. Its deep roots help stabilize soil, making it an excellent choice for erosion control in challenging sites, and its low-maintenance nature makes it a reliable option for both urban and rural landscapes.

Traditional Edible & Medicinal Info

Root infusions made from Heuchera cylindrica were used for wounds, sores, and skin irritations, while crushed roots were applied as poultices for cuts, bruises, and insect bites to aid healing. Some preparations were taken to ease stomach discomfort and diarrhea. Though not toxic, excessive consumption may cause digestive upset due to its astringent properties.
