Product Options

Richardson's Alumroot is a hardy, low-growing perennial with scalloped green leaves that form dense, tidy clumps, turning vibrant red in the fall. In late spring to early summer, delicate, airy flower spikes emerge, bearing tiny pinkish-green to pale yellow blooms that bring a soft, understated beauty to prairie plantings and naturalized gardens. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, while seed-eating birds may feed on its seeds, and its dense foliage offers shelter for insects and ground-dwelling wildlife.

This drought-tolerant plant thrives in full to partial sun, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, dry meadows, and erosion control on slopes and rocky sites. Its deep root system helps stabilize soil, while its striking fall color adds seasonal interest across a wide range of landscapes. Its tough, slightly hairy leaves are unappealing to most herbivores, offering strong deer resistance in both urban and rural settings.

Traditional Edible & Medicinal Info

Heuchera richardsonii was traditionally used as an astringent infusion to treat wounds, sores, and skin irritations, while crushed roots were applied as poultices for cuts, bruises, and insect bites to aid healing. Some preparations were taken to ease stomach discomfort and diarrhea, and though not toxic, excessive consumption may cause digestive upset due to its astringent properties.
