Alpine Bluegrass has fine-textured, blue-green blades that form compact clumps, while delicate pale orange seed heads emerge in late spring to early summer, adding bold texture to the landscape. The large, showy seed heads turn a tawny white in the fall, providing food for songbirds. With its low-maintenance nature and ability to stabilize soil, Alpine Bluegrass is an excellent, eye-catching choice for self-sustaining landscapes, alpine gardens, and meadow plantings. When used as an alternative to sod lawns, it blends beautifully with other native grasses and wildflowers to create a low meadow effect in both urban and rural spaces.
A hardy, cool-season bunchgrass, Alpine Bluegrass thrives in high-elevation meadows, rocky slopes, and alpine tundra. Well adapted to harsh conditions, this resilient native tolerates poor soils, cold temperatures, and seasonal moisture fluctuations, providing erosion control in challenging environments. Moderately resistant to deer and other grazers, young shoots may be nibbled, but mature plants are typically left undisturbed.
Alpine Blue Grass is used in our Short Grass Wildflower Meadow mix, available in the Native Grass Seed and Mixes section.
